The teaching of vocabulary is important in all curriculum subjects, including ICT. Children need to be able to understand and use the technical vocabulary that the teacher is using. Displaying the key words related to the learning objectives during your lessons is a way of reinforcing understanding and it aids spelling.
The vocabulary flashcards are organised into the following files:
General ICT terms
Finding Things Out
Exchanging & Sharing Information
Reviewing & Modifying Work
Developing Ideas & Making Things Happen
Vocabulary Template
These flashcards can be printed off and copies made for the appropriate year
groups to be displayed by the class computers or in the computer suite. Of
course some words are used by more than one year group and so will need to
be duplicated as required. No doubt there will be additional terms you may
wish to add, hence a blank version of the template.
The use of vocabulary books (where children have their own) is a particularly successful way to reinforce children's understanding of the vocabulary used in class. Each child has a notebook with the pages lettered A to Z. The children note the word, with a brief definition, to remind them if they look back at a later date. The books can also be used to note details of a program they have been using, to help refresh their memories when they return to it later in the term or year. The idea of a vocabulary book is suitable for use with years 4 to 6. Some of the words included on the flashcards might be used as part of the books.
Teachers may find lists of these words useful - especially if trying to keep a record of what the children have learned are are expected to learn in each year group. If the would be useful to you they are downloadable below. Right click on the link to save to your system, open them and then save them where you wantt to keep them or just print them off.
NB These are not the flash cards, the following files contain the complete lists of vocabulary on one A4 sheet for reference purposes only.
