Learning about St. Lucia:Teachers' Page
line.gif (2527 bytes)

The St. Lucia Project is a collection of information, photographs and links which will support and extend the teaching of a "locality in a country that is less economically developed" (Geog PoS KS2). There is a choice of activities to suit the teacher's purpose.

It is not intended to be used exclusively as the sole resource. They have been produced to complement and extend the existing hard copy resources produced by such organisations as the Geography Association and Worldaware.

Neither is it the intention that children systematically work their way though the bank of activities. Teachers need to preselect the appropriate areas that will enhance chosen aspects of the unit.

The primary focus is directed towards extending children's knowledge and understanding of a contrasting locality. However, the project can be used to extend learning opportunities in other QCA units:

Here is a set of Fact File Lesson Plans suitable for year 4 - with many thanks to Stephen Freeman School whose Fact File on Peru plan has been adapted for this task. This lesson plan concentrates on ICT rather than Geography.

The Geographical Association have a variety of materials based on St. Lucia and Castries. http://www.geography.org.uk, http://geographyshop.org.uk.

Worldaware sell packs of photographs and a video to go with their resources: http://www.worldaware.org.uk/education/projects/st_lucia/index.html

There is an overview of using St. Lucia as a contrasting locality in a web site in Kent: Differentiation in studying St. Lucia

St. Lucia One Stop is useful:

  • If you want to try to set up a link with a school. All of the schools are listed and have phone numbers - but no e-mail addresses. I would try by sending a message to this page or to 'Ask Natalie' on the page. In this communication I think I would be inclined to try to build a data base of pupils' pastimes, games, TV programmes, hobbies, computer games, board games, sports etc. This would give the pupils a real reason for writing as well as having a useful outcome.
  • Hopefully any school there will be able to send you digital photographs and maps (hint: all of the tourist places have maps, when I did this I got maps for the Little Chef etc. - to send to them).
  • Another useful feature of this page is the St. Lucian recipe section - you could make a recipe book.
  • Listen to the St. Lucian radio - what type of music do they listen to?
  • I have visited the chat room - because they are about 5 hours behind us and I went in about about 10 am it was quiet, there was one youngish youth who was willing to answer questions but that was all. This, like all chat room is touch and go - it may be useful to you it may not!

This site is out of date - but still useful!

There are aerial photographs: http://www.remote.org/frederik/culture/antigua/photos/aerial.html that can be used for looking at the land and comparing the island with England.

Geography linking into to other areas of the curriculum use the Geography National Curriculum document for information.
