Sugar used the be the main industry when there were slaves to do the bulk of the work. Slaves were brought in from West Africa. On 1830 slavery was abolished and the sugar industry declined. In 1960 the last sugar factory closed. This image shows the waterwheel that was part of the sugar mill. Bananas soon took over and the main industry. 80% of the workers are involved in the banana trade and it makes up 40% of their exports. waterwheel.jpg (39021 bytes)
When the sugar mill closed someone stopped the mill by putting a huge spanner in the works - hence the modern saying "Put a spanner in the works" to stop something working. sugar_plantaion.jpg (31603 bytes)
