Set the pupils into groups. Each group will be doing their own study
about St. Lucia.
You may like to give each group a different aspect to cover.
Questions will group under a few simple headings: human geography -
learning about the people of St. Lucia; physical geography - learning
about the land and land use, maybe the sea as well; climate; the Rainforest;
the volcanoes or the coral reefs. If several groups do slightly different
studies you could make a book or a PowerPoint presentation from the
finished pieces of work.
It is important that the pupils are given an audience
for this work, without that they cannot achieve level 4 or above in
ICT assessment.
The first things they are asked to do is make a list of questions
and to e-mail them to you so that you can check that they are on the
right lines. A few questions to start them off:
- How many people live there?
- How big is the island?
- What is the weather like?
- What crops do they grow?
- What do they export (sell) to other countries?
- What is their currency?
- What sort of landscape is it?
- What animals might you find there?
|
- What clothes do they wear?
- What language do they speak?
- Do the children have schools like us?
- What work do the adults do?
- What do their houses look like?
- Do they listen to music?
- Do they watch films?
- Do they read books?

There are several options for presenting this work - the easiest to
achieve is a booklet with a chapter for each group, a more exciting
one is creating a PowerPoint presentation that could be shown off to
the school in assembly or a parent;s evening.
