QCA Scheme of work - Unit 6A -  Multimedia Presentation

In this unit children learn to create a multimedia presentation using text and images. They are taught how to create links between pages and show sensitivity to their audience.

Lessons 1- Getting to grips with PowerPoint and planning
Lessons 2 - Creating a presentation
Evaluation - Of the lessons
Assessment - Measured against QCA learning objectives and the NC level descriptors

Introduction

Year 6 pupils had been working on a D&T project and were then asked to produce a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint. Having mastered the skills of making a presentation they went on to produce another presentation about circuits as a teaching and revision guide to be used by the Y4 pupils.

Context

The children had been working on a D&T project about structures and were instructed to use this work to create a multi media presentation. They worked in pairs in a 16 station computer room.

Children are to create a design for a multimedia presentation showing clearly the links between pages

To be able to choose elements for a presentation to develop the organisation and structure to convey intention to an audience.

To create or capture and manipulate images for inserting into a Multimedia package.

To have an increasing awareness of intended audience

Children evaluate, review and refine their presentation.

Children should first draft their presentation on paper showing how the pages link, describe their audience and how they will access the presentation

Children should take and manipulate digital photographs or other images (eg scanned drawings, diagrams etc. for use in their presentations

Produce a presentation (web pages/ multimedia) involving images, text, sound firstly about their D&T work to present to the rest of the class and possibly the other teachers.

Produce a presentation about circuits for revision for the end of KS2 tests and to introduce the topic to the year 4.

Children should first design their pages in draft on paper showing how the pages link, and describe their audience and how they will access the presentation

Children should take and manipulate digital photographs for use in their presentations

Produce a presentation ) involving images, text, sound about their D&T project followed by a science presentation about circuits.

Preparatory work

Lesson 1

Year 6  had been working on a 'Structures' project for D&T and were asked to create a multimedia presentation. They each gave their presentation to the rest of the class using the projector. They evaluated their own production and suggested how it might have been improved.

Lessons 2

The class spent a second lesson refining their presentations. It was obvious how much they enjoyed being creative in this way and of course this reinforced what they had learned in D&T

Lesson 3

The next time they used PowerPoint was to demonstrate an electrical circuit
diagram. Emphasis on considering their audience (aiming to show the
presentation to a year 4 class).
The diagram was created using FlexiCAD and they saved the circuit with the
switch in the open position and then with circuit completed. PowerPoint does not recognise FlexiCAD files so they copied the diagrams and pasted into PowerPoint. A small group recorded the sound from their buzzer and saved the file for all to use.

Evaluation of work completed

The pupils found it very valuable to look at each other's work and gauge the reaction of their audience. It made them more aware of the overuse of special effects and more sparing with their second presentations. They understood the importance of audience awareness. They were much more restrained with the sound and visual effects. Some tried to use the template designs and quickly found limitations there. This subject didn't lend itself to 'jazzy' music or confusing backgrounds.

Assessment - measure against the QCA learning outcomes and National Curriculum Level Descriptors

most children will:

use a multimedia authoring program to organise, refine and present a set of linked multimedia pages, which incorporate images, sounds and text

(Level 4 - combined different forms of information from a variety of sources. They have used ICT to present information in different forms and shown they are aware of the intended audience and the need for quality in their presentations)

some children will not have
made so much progress and will:

use a multimedia authoring package to assemble images, sound and text on a multimedia page

(Level 3 - used ICT to generate, develop, organise and present their work. They have shared and exchanged their ideas with others.)

some children will have
progressed further and will:

use a multimedia package to organise, refine and present a set of linked multimedia pages, which incorporate images, sounds and text; create pages which offer users a variety of options; present information that matches the needs of the audience

(Level 5 They have begun to refine and present information in different forms and styles for specific purposes and audiences. Assess the use of ICT in their work and reflect critically in order to make improvements in subsequent work.)
