Year 6 children spent a day at Henlow learning about
various aspects of Citizenship and decided to make presentations to relay what
they had learned to the younger children in their school. The children had had
the opportunity to play with PowerPoint once before.
Context
This work took place over a number of sessions during the last half of the summer term with a class of Year 6 pupils of mixed ability. The children were paired in unusual sets, one of each pair may have been lacking in confidence with some aspect of the work, children confident using computers were groups with children good at language work, artistic work or public speaking. The teacher tried to make each child's contribution valuable to the pair. A lot of time was taken over planning these groups.
This work was building on previous work where the children were asked to create individual pages for a book using Publisher.
The school has a network of 15 computers in a small computer room. Children can work in pairs at computers. There were occasions when some of the children were not working on computers and they were able to work in the classroom under the supervision of an LSA or other adult helper but their work was directly related to the project.

Children are to create a design for a
multimedia presentation showing clearly the links between pages To be able to choose elements for a presentation to develop the organisation and structure to convey intention to an audience. To create or capture and manipulate images for inserting into a Multimedia package. To have an increasing awareness of intended audience Children evaluate, review and refine their presentation. |
Children should first design their pages in draft on paper
showing how the pages link, and describe their audience and how they will
access the presentation Children should take and manipulate digital photographs for use in their presentations Produce a presentation (web pages/ multimedia) involving images, text, sound about citizenship for year 5 children at school |
Discussion with children
during planning. Are they aware of key features necessary?
Evidence from planning boards.
Observation of skills and organisation during work on computer. Final
presentation and effectiveness. Have children been able to organise and
create a set of multimedia pages which incorporate images, sounds and text?

Lesson 1 - Introduction and Evaluating Primary Presentations
Computer Activity - Evaluating primary school presentations. The teacher searched the Internet for children's PowerPoint presentations. She downloaded five year 6 stories created with PowerPoint. These were put into the shared area of the network so that children could access them and spend a little time looking through them. Her idea was to stimulate motivation and show the children what could be achieved by others their own age. When shown this set of five presentations pupils were asked to note the design features which contribute to a good presentation and what might spoil it such as:
(If you wish to do this activity you can easily use the samples on our website: )
Classroom Activity - The teacher led a discussion on possible content, structure and organisation. A list was made to show all of the possible aspects of citizenship that they felt able to use and each pair of children made a choice for their presentation. The first big aspect of work was to prepare a story board to work from. This was done on A3 paper. Reminders about working in teams - and valuing each other's ideas and taking all opinions into account had to be given at this point.
Lesson 2 - Gathering Resources and making slides
Starting work on their presentation - all of this was in the computer room. The teacher gave a brief demonstration of how to make a new slide and insert a text box if needed.
As soon as the pupils had put the text content into a page they wanted find suitable pictures and backgrounds and make them look good. It was a real effort for everyone make sure that the content was accurate before the presentation itself was worked on
As children finished their text content they were able to start to find suitable clipart, sound files, animations etc. to use in their presentation. The teacher gave a quick demonstration of how to find specific clipart resources from the Internet.
Children were able to use the digital camera to record some of their own photographs for use in the presentation
Children were able to use Colour Magic to make their own drawings if required
The teacher began with a brief demonstration of animating pages with PowerPoint.
The teacher did a quick demonstration of how to link pages using buttons - though many children used the automatic page transition built into PowerPoint. Anyone wanting to use them could add buttons as necessary.
Lesson 3 - Finishing the presentations
Most groups took two to three hours to create their linked pages. This was spread over a number of sessions in the computer area. Each group had the opportunity to present their presentation to the rest of the class.

The presentations had been developed for presentation to year 5 children. Half of the presentations were taken to the Oxfordshire Primary conference and presented to the teachers present, the other half were presented to year 5 in school. All children had a wonderful on-screen presentation and verbal contribution to make. They worked very hard and it was a huge success for all.
Assessment - Measured Against the QCA Learning Outcomes and NC Level Descriptors
| most children have: | used a
presentation program to organise, refine and present a set of linked pages
incorporating text, images and sound
(Level 4 - combined different forms of information from a variety of sources. They have used ICT to present information in different forms and shown they are aware of the intended audience and the need for quality in their presentations) |
| some children have not made so much progress and have: | used a
presentation program to assemble images and text on a slide
(Level 3 - used ICT to generate, develop, organise and present their work. They have shared and exchanged their ideas with others.) |
| some children have progressed further and have: | used a
presentation program to organise, refine and present a set of linked pages
incorporating images and text; created pages which offer users a variety of
options; presented information that matches the needs of the audience and
which shows an awareness of audience and purpose
(Level 5 They have begun to refine and present information in different forms and styles for specific purposes and audiences. Assess the use of ICT in their work and reflect critically in order to make improvements in subsequent work.) |
