QCA Scheme of Work & Unit

Learning Objectives

Use Starting Graph to:

Science

1A Ourselves

to collect and organise data and present it in a chart

Ask the children to suggest ways in which they differ.  Help them to collect data about themselves e.g. eye colour, size of feet, hair colour and to represent this using either the example tables in RM Starting Graph or by creating their own.  This unit links to ICT 1E Representing Information Graphically.

2A Health & Growth

that we eat different kinds of food

to collect information and to present the results as a block graph

With children plan and carry out a survey of favourite foods and help the children present results as a block graph.  Create own table in Starting Graph to present their findings

2c Variation

that some differences between themselves and other children can be measured

that living things in the locality can be grouped according to observable similarities & differences

to present results in a block graph

Help the children measure their hand span.  Help the children to make a tally chart and a table, then block graph of their findings using Starting Graph

Give the children a collection of pictures of animals found in the local environment and ask them to find different ways of sorting them e.g. legs/no legs.  Talk with children about their findings and help them to make block graphs using RM Starting Graph to show their findings.

2E Forces & Movement

to use results in a table to draw a block graph

Draw a graph of the distance cars travel down a ramp – make sure that you use Green level.

Geography

1 Around Our School

about the need for leisure activities and the type of facilities available

With the children’s help, design and carry out a survey of how they, their parents, other adults and friends spend their leisure time [Children could create a table of the main findings and input the data to find the most popular leisure activities in the class]* This idea is not written in the QCA module.  It is a suggestion

2 How Can We Make Our Local Area Safer?

to carry out a small-scale investigation about parking in the local area

Discuss with the children what makes a fair test in a survey.  With the children’s help, design and carry out a survey of the numbers of cars parked in the street.  Ask the children to present the results as a graph, using simple graphing software and analyse them.  ** Note Starting Graph yellow only goes up to 13 on each column!

6 Investigating Our Local Area

to collect evidence

about land use and settlements

to use ICT to handle data

Identify land use e.g. houses, shops, roads, services etc within a small area and mark on a base map using a colour coded key

In class, collate the children’s results and ask the children to present their results using ICT e.g. simple graphs and pie charts.

Design & Technology

1C Eat More Fruit & Vegetables

to identify a target group for what they intend to design and make

** Not in QCA – this is suggested in the Points to Note section
Represent the class’ favourite fruits in a pictogram so they could design a fruit snack to include the most popular fruits or vegetables.
