Anita Leech (Class 3 teacher at Sunningwell School) shares some experiences on video conferencing in the classroom.

It’s not rocket science but video conferencing can be complicated! Thankfully for Sunningwell Primary School there were plenty of experts on hand (or should I say online) when the children of Class 3 got in touch with a class of children from Herne Elementary in Houston, Texas. Until the day before it was touch and go as to whether the conference would take place. However Tim Boundy, at UKERNA, Amy Jaeger in the US and our own Dave Headey from the ICT Services team worked hard to sort out the technical difficulties to make sure the children were not disappointed.

On the day the children were able to exchange questions about their schools and the local environments and share books as part of the ‘Read Around the Planet’ activity organised by UKERNA and JVCS.

It was a cultural adventure that the children could not have experienced without this technology. We’re all looking forward to the next time when we can get in touch with other children in different parts of the world. For now we’d like to thank everyone who made it possible.
