Liz Hunt Personalised Learning Consultant introduces the winners in the 2006 Maths Challenge Competition held at the end of last year.

January 15th saw the final chapter to the Digitalbrain Maths Challenge held last term, when the two winning teams received their prizes.

The Maths Challenge spanned a week of mathematics lessons using ICT.  Using a Digitalbrain Community, a challenge was set for primary school pupils to create a healthy lunchbox.  The lunch had to adhere to three main criteria – be healthy, be popular and make a profit.  The pupils answered polls to gather the popularity information, used a spreadsheet to work out the costs and looked at calories and food groups across the week.  A few further twists were thrown in towards the end of the week to keep them on their toes!

The winning year 5/6 entry was from Elizabeth, Alex and Zoe from Enstone Primary School and the winning year 3/4 entry was from Lauren and Lauren from Rush Common Primary School.  Congratulations to all of them for their hard work.

When asked about the challenge, the girls said ‘You had to do something everyday – a new part of the challenge.  It was very fun but quite tricky; especially when you had to change your lunchbox to fruit that was in season.  We thought about what we had in my garden – apples, pears and plums. Oh, and you had to change your menu as a result of the survey too.’

The Prize

The pupils and their teachers had a fantastic prize courtesy of Sainsbury’s at Heyford Hill.  They were met at customer services and taken for a behind-the-scenes tour of the store.  This included the various refrigerated rooms and a freezer room – which really was freezing!  They visited the bakery, behind the fish counter and even had a go at shopping for someone’s Internet order!  (Apologies to that person if we got anything wrong!) After eating a generous lunch the girls then took a trolley and shopped for their food.  They were able to purchase enough of their winning lunchboxes for their whole class to have one each.  Each pupil sat behind the checkout and scanned their shopping through.

They all stayed within their budgets and made a fantastic profit – just as they said they would in their entry!  Alex and Zoe were shopping for 27 pupils and rang up a bill of £25.01 making their lunchbox cost 73p.  At the sale price of £1.95 (set by the challenge) they made a healthy profit of £1.22 a box!  Lauren and Lauren were shopping for 36 pupils.  They rang up a bill of £27.95 thus their box sold at 78p leaving a profit of £1.17.

As they left the store, pushing their produce out to the car, they were planning how and when it would be best to have their picnic lunch with their class - an event that will be great fun for them all – of that I am quite sure.
