Liz Hunt Personalised Learning Consultant introduces an exciting challenge for KS2 mathematicians this November.

During November, the ICT Team, working in collaboration with the Maths Team will be running an Interactive Maths Challenge for Key Stage 2 pupils.  A major corporate sponsor has agreed to provide prizes for the winners of the challenge so mark the dates Thursday 9 November to Friday 17 November in your diary.

Over the period of a week the pupils will be presented with a number of different mathematical challenges building up to a final piece of work to be submitted for judging. It has been designed in such a way that it will enable teachers to continue teaching mathematics during that week using ICT as a tool. The challenge will be accessed by pupils through a dedicated Digitalbrain community.  Help files will be available to staff and pupils as the project requires.

A pilot was run back in June with Middle Barton School.  Eryl Connelly, the ICT co-ordinator there has written the following:

‘Having undertaken some Digitalbrain training I was keen to take part in the pilot scheme to find out whether using Digitalbrain was a practical option within the classroom. We have an ICT suite of 17 computers and re-jigged the timetable in order to give sufficient access for the project.  My class of 32 mixed Y3/4 were very excited about logging into Digitalbrain and were able to do this easily as they were accustomed to using their OCN logins. They were able to access the resources independently and enjoyed the ‘quest’ aspect of the project. I was able to access the challenge the night before which enabled me to adapt aspects as necessary. The maths was a real challenge for some of them although they had had some experience of the programs required – so I helped out with areas when needed. They loved making decisions and using and applying what they knew to the challenges. They found uploading their results a little tricky at first but did master the process. Overall, the project was great for showing them the practical application of their skills and knowledge in several curriculum areas. It highlighted the potential of using Digitalbrain for cross-curricular work and for accessing shared work. The Y5/6 class were obviously more skilled with some programs but the challenge allows for this.  They all responded positively to the whole project. I would recommend taking part to anyone and look forward to the next one!’

More details will follow in due course but if you think you would like to take part, please send an e-mail to lhunt2@sds.theocn.net to register your interest.   You will also need to get your pupils all logged in to Digitalbrain so that they can be added to the Maths Challenge Community before the start date of 9th November.
