Julie Leigh, Co-ordinating Adviser for ICT, shares with us some data identifying time allocation in ICT at Key Stages 3 and 4

Each year John Evans, Science Adviser, collates useful data from secondary schools that includes: class size, timetable and curriculum data. Below I have extracted the ICT data to allow schools to compare their department allocations.
At KS3 33 out of 34 schools are delivering ICT as a discrete subject in years 7
and 9. In year 7 and 9, on average, ICT receives less time allocation than all subjects except: PSE, Citizenship, Dance and Drama. Will this time allocation increase as a result of the higher profile of ICT KS3 results from the onscreen test in 2008?

In KS4, three schools offer ECDL in Year 10 and two schools CLAIT. In Year 12 just over 200 male students take up Information Technology in comparison to less than 90 females, there is a similar gender gap for Computer Studies/Computing where there are twice as many male as female students.
