Carol Rainbow, Primary ICT Advisory Teacher, introduces a new interactive art resource for KS2 and KS3.

A new section of the ArtisanCam website has been launched this autumn.  It is aimed at Key Stage 2 and 3 children and their teachers. This is a new interactive educational resource to try and encourage more children to get involved in Art.  It brings a variety of artistic techniques into the classroom such as screen-printing, basket weaving and pottery.  The website – http://www.artisancam.org.uk - provides access to contemporary visual artists and their work so children can watch, learn and have a go themselves.  Live web casts of workshops from artists can be streamed into school for anyone with a projector and large screen.  Pupils can send questions to the artist by e-mail.

The site is split into two areas, the Learner’s Zone and KidZone (fun and informal learning maybe for homework or a computer club).

The Learner’s Zone includes:

techniques (short video clips with the artist showing his or her main techniques)

·          influences (insights into favourite works)

·          questions (where children can e-mail the artist questions)

·          workshops (a step-by-step classroom resource)

·          gallery (online gallery of artists work)

The KidZone is the new area of the website providing interactive tools and activities especially for young children (for school and home use).

The Kidzone includes:

·          have a go (virtual workshops such as decorating a plate where you add the decoration, virtually fire the plate and then fetch it from the kiln to see what it looks like finished.)

·          explore (which concentrates on looking at an artist’s style and offers an example piece of art to work on)

·          how to (an interactive activity to develop skills such as creating a collage)

·          ask the artist (children’s questions and the answers)

The website has great potential and has been nominated for a Bafta award.
